About Anike

About Us. The mindset from an African 's perspective

What We Do

At Anike, we explore Indigenous knowledge inspired by nature. Our intention is to foster learning and Innovative thinking among youth, by exploring the evolution of such knowledge in ancient, historical & contemporary practices in Africa and the Diaspora.

What Is Indigenous Knowledge
About Us - African Map Globe

What We Do +

Additionally, we:

- Collect Indigenous knowledge primarily from observation & oral sources (elders, stories, sayings, proverbs, names, praise poetry, corpus, artifacts etc.) and curate to enlighten.

- Explore tools (or media) that have facilitated these indigenous practices and the evolution of such media in modern technology. Attribution of indigenous inventions to their inventors to inspire innovation is imperative e.g The Àyàn and the invention of the talking drum as a tool for long distance communication.

- Disseminate this knowledge through interactive learning platforms (e.g NatureLab) that enable a comprehension of these practices within their cultural context. Our Indigenous knowledge-based approach to learning involves highlighting the psycho-spiritual, artistic and scientific disciplines within such knowledge.

Indigenous Knowledge_SAYINGS (Sample)

Two rams charging towards each other.

Rams Charging

The Yòrùbá saying:

"Àgbò T'Nfèyìn Rìn, Agbára L'Nlo Mú Wá"

Translation: The Ram that recedes by moving backwards is not admitting defeat, but accumulating energy before charging forward.

This Saying demonstrates that pre-existing indigenous knowledge informed principles within natural science disciplines such as:

  • Biomechanical Motion
  • Potential & Kinetic Energy
  • Acceleration
  • Collision

The UNDERESTIMATED Hornet : "Má Fojú 'Di Mí"

Ifa Corpus_Binary Coding

ÒDÍ: #4/256 Binary Codes

Indigenous Yòrúbá people invented an ancient computational or coding system for organizing knowledge acquired from their interactions with nature (this predates modern computer programming systems by centuries).

@ANIKE, we focus on the valuable lessons they learned in the process of Inventing.

Be inspired by nature.

Biomimicry: Hair braiding inspired by the ancient wild Einkorn Wheat.

From prehistory to modernity, Africans have investigated nature for varied reasons — to regenerate, emulate, modify, invoke, ‘bottle’ or contain her — and these investigations enabled access and insight into the structures of many of nature's manifestations.

What is Indigenous Knowledge?

Indigenous Knowledge

Innate knowledge + knowledge acquired from the exploration of nature—Indigenous Knowledge— evolved into cultural practices, uniquely demonstrating how the ingenuity of Africans delivered pragmatic solutions to dire necessities: INVENTIONS
