Indigenous Knowledge

What Is Indigenous Knowledge?

Indigenous Knowledge = Innate knowledge + Knowledge acquired from the exploration of nature.

Such knowledge evolved into cultural practices, uniquely demonstrating how the ingenuity of Africans delivered pragmatic solutions to dire necessities: INVENTIONS

We explore how the investigations of Mother Nature inspired Human Nature. How (with nature as their wellspring & laboratory) Indigenous Africans problem solved by inventing tools & techniques to ensure wellbeing e.g Naming traditions_Oríkì/Àníké-Àgbò & Weaving techniques.

Odù-Ifá

We view the Ifá Corpus as an "Encyclopedia of Yòrùbá civilization" and explore the 16 Ojú-Odù Ifá as a body of knowledge passed down generations as guidelines for attaining a state of WELLBEING: recommended “Recipes for Success.” We intentionally focus on the “Pàtàkì" or valuable lessons learnt.

Sample 1: Sayings

Two rams charging towards each other.

The Yòrùbá saying:

"Àgbò T'Nfèyìn Rìn, Agbára L'Nlo Mú Wá"

Translation: The Ram that recedes by moving backwards is not admitting defeat, but accumulating energy before charging forward.

This essence of this Saying demonstrates the pre-existing indigenous knowledge that informed principles within natural science disciplines such as:

  • Biomechanical Motion
  • Potential & Kinetic Energy
  • Acceleration, Collisi

Be inspired by nature.

Biomimicry: Hair braiding inspired by the ancient wild Einkorn Wheat.

From prehistory to modernity, Africans have investigated nature for varied reasons — to regenerate, emulate, modify, invoke, ‘bottle’ or contain her — and these investigations enabled access and insight into the structures of many of nature's manifestations.

Sample Odù #71: Ògúndá-Òtúra

The Ifá Corpus - consisting of 256 binary codes or Odù - inspired modern computer coding systems. @Anike, we view the Corpus as oral narratives passed down generations, highlighting ancestral ingenuity and the problem-solving tools, techniques & technology invented as part of their creative process.

Accordingly, we design and explore themes around specific Odù that reference their discoveries/Inventions.
